Tha Dynasty: That's What It Is [EP] (Urban Legendz Records, 2006)

Ever wondered what happened to former J Records trio Lyric following their demise? Then look no further than the above group which featured two former members Thema (pronounced Tayma) and Nicole... Nicole left Lyric before they were signed to the label but Thema was one third of the group along with Fendi and Jacki. The brainchild of Thema's brother, producer Carlos "Priceless" McKinney, they were tipped to be the next Destiny's Child but in the end found themselves pushed out in favor of rising star Alicia Keys. They turned down an offer from Universal Records
before parting ways in 2004. In 2005, Thema and Carlos again reunited with Nicole to form the above trio with new member Michi. Their debut single, a southern-inspired party joint "That's What It Is" featured Dem Franchize Boyz but I don't think it ever had much of a wide release and their debut album "Birth Of A Dynasty" appeared to be a no-show. Featuring a wide range of mid-2000s styles from Southern club bangers ("That's What It Is"/"Put In Work"), to "1 Thing"-esque dance floor fillers ("Lose Control") and smooth throwback tunes ("Feeling Ya Gangsta"), it could've definitely filled the gap in the market left by the major players (Destiny's Child and TLC) but sadly as with their first effort Lyric, it appeared to go nowhere.
